Week 1: Introduction to Project Management
You will be introduced to the basic meaning, purpose, and importance of project management. This week helps you understand what a project is, who a project manager is, and how projects are planned, organized, monitored, and completed successfully. You will also begin to see how project management helps teams manage time, resources, tasks, people, risks, and goals in a structured way.
You will understand how projects move from an idea to a structured plan through the project life cycle. This week introduces the main stages of a project, with a focus on initiation, where the project purpose, goals, stakeholders, scope, risks, and expected outcomes are clearly defined. By the end of this section, you will know how to start a project properly, ask the right questions, and set a strong foundation before planning and execution begin.
A great project doesn't succeed by chance—it succeeds because it is planned well. This week teaches you how to build a clear roadmap before any work begins. You'll learn how to define exactly what needs to be done, break a project into manageable tasks using a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), organise those tasks into a realistic timeline, and understand how they connect through dependencies. You'll also discover how to estimate project costs, create a simple budget, and monitor spending to keep your project on track. Using practical tools like Google Sheets and Gantt charts, you'll gain hands-on experience creating a project plan that balances scope, time, and budget—the three foundations of successful project management. By the end of the week, you'll have a complete project plan that prepares you to execute projects confidently, stay organised, and deliver results efficiently.
This week introduces you to some of the most widely used project management platforms, including Trello, Asana, Notion, and Jira. You'll learn how to create project boards, assign tasks, set deadlines, track progress, and collaborate with team members in real time. You'll also understand the strengths of each tool and how to choose the right one based on the size and complexity of a project. By the end of the week, you'll have built and managed your own project board for your fictional project, giving you practical experience with the same tools used by project managers and teams around the world.
This week introduces you to Agile, a flexible way of managing projects and responding to change. You’ll learn how Scrum works, including Sprints, Daily Standups, User Stories, Product Backlogs, and key team roles. By the end of the week, you’ll create an Agile workflow and plan a two-week Sprint for your project.
This week focuses on managing the people who influence your project's success. You'll learn how to identify and prioritise stakeholders, create effective communication plans, write professional project updates, and run productive meetings. By the end of the week, you'll be able to keep stakeholders informed, manage expectations, and communicate confidently throughout a project.
This week teaches you how to identify, assess, and manage project risks before they become major problems. You'll learn how to build a Risk Register, prioritise risks, apply effective response strategies, and resolve issues as they arise. By the end of the week, you'll be able to minimise project disruptions and make informed decisions when challenges occur.
This week covers how to successfully close a project and evaluate its outcomes. You'll learn how to complete project handovers, write closure reports, document lessons learned, and build a portfolio that showcases your skills.
